Sociocultural and Economic Environment of Albaida

Al-Baidà" is an Arabic adjective that means "the white or the white lands". Name that since before the 11th century (castello vell d'Albaida) refers to the whole Valley, the river and the current central region of the Valencian Community.

Albaida is located in the south of the province of Valencia in the region of La Vall d'Albaida. The town is located at 323 meters above sea level and has 5,989 inhabitants (12-31-2021 census). It is a dynamic town with a diversified economy. The municipal area is 35.25 km² and is an undulating territory, the highest mountain being Covalta (850 m.).

The landscape is dominated by white lands and deep ravines. The natural way to change provinces and access the mountains of Alcoy is through the port of Albaida. Near this pass we find the Naixement ravine, which gives rise to the formation of the Albaida river. Albaida's situation has turned it into an important communication hub for centuries: Xàtiva – Alicante royal road, Xàtiva – Alicante motorway. That's why the saying "roll where you roll, stop at Albaida".

Albaida has a Mediterranean climate with an average temperature of 16°C and an average rainfall of around 600 mm/year. It usually snows in the mountains once a year and when it rains the most it is with the storms from the Levant and Gregal in autumn. The westerly wind blows strong, dry and warm and fogs are a recurring occurrence in winter and spring. The forest consists of holm oaks, pines and associated species and the fauna typical of this forest (wild boar, rabies, rabbits, partridges). Along the river, poplars, elms, reeds and reeds grow.

In the village there is a private children's school (the "La Inmaculada" nuns) and a municipal "La Vila". Two public schools covering primary and children's education from 3 to 5 years old ("Covalta" and "Elias Tormo"). A secondary education institute "Josep Segrelles" that also offers training cycles and a permanent school for adults "Concepción Carpí" with a great diversity of non-regular education courses.

This educational infrastructure not only supplies the town of school age, it also takes on students from neighboring towns.

Regarding the cultural aspects, the first thing we must say is that Albaida is a Valencian-speaking town that is found in all administrative, social and academic areas.

At this point we must highlight a very important feature of the town: the historical-artistic cultural heritage as it has resulted from a long history. We can talk about:

Churches, hermitages and convents: the Church of the Assumption built in the 17th century over the old mosque; the church of the Nativity of the Aljorf; convent of the Capuchins (16th century) and of the Dominicans of Santa Anna (15th century); hermitages (Roser, Gràcia, Miquel, Antoni, Josep, Calvari, Salvador);

The bell tower and its manual touch since the medieval age;

The old castle, built in the 12th century;

The Marquesal Palace built in several phases between the 15th and 16th centuries) and where the MITA (International Museum of Puppets) is currently located;

The Vallcaneda house (current town hall) from the 13th century;

The "Josep Segrelles" House-Museum;
The old medieval walls and gates (the Villa and Aljorf);

The ditches (of the Port), the public fountains (La Vila, Argamassa, del Barri, etc.) and the water mills (Nou);

Industrial chimneys.

We cannot forget that Albaida is a town with many associations of all kinds where people are very participatory.

Social Associations such as the Retired, the Twinning Committee "Ruelle sur Trouve", the Blood Donors, the housewives, Carites, the Holy Week brotherhoods, the association of the Barri de Sant Antoni.

Environmental Associations such as the Les Tosquetes group. Juveniles like the quintos and the scouts.

Cultural Associations such as the theater group "La Inestable", the dances "La Vall", the cultural group "La Morca", the group and guild of Campaners, the three bands of music and the band of cornets and drums, the choral vocal group.

Fun like the central board of Moors and Christians, the revelers committee, the waitresses. Sports such as football, basketball, ball, motorcycle clubs, etc. and their respective sports schools.

Albaida has traditionally been an agricultural town accompanied by a typical wax industry (beginnings of the 20th century) and textiles (second half of the same 20th century).

At the time of the Arabs, Albaida was an important industrial town with silk (mulberry trees and silkworms). It is then clear that the greater weight of the industrial sector is the one that generates more employment and jobs.

We can say without fear of making a mistake that textiles occupy 3/4 of the currently working population. The tourism sector is very marginal.

Regarding the services sector, the main activities are retail trade, in addition, companies dedicated to transport. The construction sector does not play an important role.

An aspect of great significance is the high number of jobs that are in a situation of an underground economy where women are the main source of labor in folding and packaging workshops in the textile sector.
