GRELA SÁNCHEZ, Laura Herminia; MARTÍNEZ GALÁN, Mª Isabel Catalog of the archive of the Confraternity of Santa Llúcia, Virgin and Martyr, of the city of Valencia (1993)
Valentia Edetanorum, vulgo del Cid (1704)

This important old map, in four leaves, of the city of Valencia is by Tomàs Vicente Tosca (1651-1723), priest, scholar, mathematician, cartographer and local theologian, who was one of the founders of the Novatores group, an established scientific society with the purpose of challenging and renewing existing ideas and practices. Father Tosca's most important book was Compendio Matemático, a work of nine volumes that he composed between 1707 and 1715 where, in addition to mathematics and geometry, other subjects such as astronomy, geography, nautical, military architecture, optics and perspective. The success of this work was so great that several editions were made and it was translated into other languages such as German, French and Italian. Tosca also designed and built a large geographic globe. The map of Valencia made by Tosca in 1704 provides detailed views of public and private buildings, streets, squares and other features of the city. In the upper right corner of the map there is an allegory of the city, the work of José Fortea, where a midwife holds the coat of arms of the city and carries a torch in her hand; from the heart comes a bow with the legend: Ardet et lucet intus et foris (Burns and shines inside and outside). In the lower left corner, within a large baroque border decorated with motifs alluding to mathematics and the fine arts, there is the map key or "Notes Explanation". It has a long list of parishes, convents, schools, hospitals, palaces, houses, lodges and other places in the city. The scale, on the third leaf, is expressed in one to 1200 Valencian pams (a unit of measurement equivalent to 14.7 centimeters).
