The Historical Archive of the Valencian Community is created by article 88 of Law 12/2009, of the Presidency of the Generalitat, which modifies the name of the Central Archive of the Generalitat Valenciana created by Decree 57/1984, of 21 of May, of the Council of the Generalitat Valenciana, subordinate to the Ministry of Culture, Education and Science, whose mission is to collect, preserve and make available for use the documentary funds of the Generalitat Valenciana, whatever their support and form of presentation.

By virtue of Law 3/2005 on Archives of the Generalitat, the former Central Archive of the Generalitat Valenciana is renamed the Archive of the Generalitat and becomes the head of the Valencian Archives System. In this Archive of the Generalitat, the documentation of files related to the period of establishment of the Generalitat must be preserved, as well as all that historical documentation that is considered of interest and the copies that, in any type of support, obtain historical documentation of which he is not the owner.
