Created by means of the Ministerial Order of September 24, 1974 (BOE n.247, 15-10-1974), with the initial aim - later expanded - of receiving the transfers of the documentary funds produced by the services of the State Administration in Alicante and of safeguarding the centuries-old notarial protocols. Management was transferred to the Generalitat Valenciana on October 13, 1983 (Royal Decree 3,066/1983; BOE n.296, 12-12-1983)
Its first headquarters, shared with the Public Library of the State, was in Paseíto de Ramiro, in the traditional center of Alicante.
The priority activity in the early days was the reception of foundational funds such as: notarial protocols, the Archives of the Tax Delegation and the first transfers from the rest of the branches of the State Delegated Administration , and the inventory of funds most demanded by researchers.
Since 2005, it has been fully computerized, but with a comprehensive archive management system that will form part of the SAVEX program (Valencian Online Archival System), with which it is intended to launch a computerized system and comprehensive management of the files that are part of the Valencian Archives System as promulgated by Law 3/2005, of June 15, of the Generalitat, on Archives.
Currently, the archive is located in a new building inaugurated on January 10, 2008. It has a built-up area of 6,632 m² and is composed of two volumes of two different heights, separated by a landscaped interior courtyard, and distributed in two areas: a private one intended for internal work and a public one for users.
On the first floor is the researchers' room, with 35 reading places.
The warehouses occupy 75% of the built space, with a capacity of 35,000 linear meters of shelves.

In person or at a distance (telephone, fax, postal or e-mail). All funds have some instrument of description: indexes, inventories and catalogues. The consultation is freely accessible, with the restrictions set by current legislation. The researcher must be identified with an ID or passport.
