The Municipal Archive of Xàtiva has been formed by the natural dynamics of the town hall, which governs the municipality since the s. XIII, when it was governed by the Council. Its funds begin in the 13th century, although the bulk of the documentation corresponds to the 18th century and onwards, since the archive was burned during the fire of the city in 1707.

The 20th century has been a mixed process for the Municipal Archive. It will function regularly until the 60s, when the archivist Carlos Sarthou Carreres retires and there is no longer a person in charge of the service. Until the 1980s, the archive was only looked after sporadically.

From the 1980s the documentation began to be inventoried and in 1991 its new headquarters was inaugurated in the Trinitarian Convent. In 1995 he was given the position of director of the archive, recovering it as a municipal service and with the intention of contributing to the conservation of the documentary heritage of the region and the development of local historiography.
The chronology of the documentation starts in 1330 to 2020.

Documentary funds
The documentary funds of the local administration have a clearly defined profile, in terms of their typologies. These respond to the organic-functional structure of the producing body, in our case, a town council. At the same time, this organic-functional structure is derived from the organization with which the local administration is endowed to fulfill its purposes, which are none other than the management of local affairs to improve the quality of life of its citizens.
Therefore, we find, in a municipal fund table, a division, which is structured into Sections and Series, some of which are very stable throughout history, while others are short-lived. In the first case we can find typologies such as municipal acts, which include the deliberations of the main governing bodies: Town Council, Old Regime council, constitutional, Restoration, dictatorship, democratic councils, Permanent Municipal Commissions , of Government or Boards of Government, or the Plenum of the Corporations. Different names but identical series, very continuous over time, because they have been and are the instruments with which the municipal institutions have governed politically, juridically and legally. Or those related to the economic governance of the same institution: those items destined to income and expenses, and which manage the same administrative practice: enter through taxes or other instruments and pay. Own and Arbitrage, Income and Expenses, Budgets, etc. Likewise, different names for the same practice.
Other documentary series have lasted over time, but the change in political, economic and administrative realities have brought them to an end: documentation from the foral period relating to the Rationals, Court Clerks, Clavaris, Mostassafia, Justices, Corregiments, etc. There are series that have barely lasted a few years, because the incumbent has created offices or departments that the successor has eliminated. These typologies are known in archival science as closed series.
As can be seen, the movement of documents and, by extension, municipal information, is very dynamic over time, unlike archives of a national or regional nature, usually exclusively historical, in which there is no changes in the series, because the only thing they do is preserve the documentation of institutions that have disappeared. In the municipal archives, when the councils continue to exist, there are always transfers and income.
Another important function performed by the municipal archive is to serve not only as an archive of the municipal institution, but also as an archive of the city of Xàtiva. This means that he must also worry about the evolution of other institutions that give political, social, economic, cultural, festive, musical, religious or other life to the city of Xàtiva. May God collect the beat, the vital throbbing of the Xati people who gather there to do politics - in political parties -; associations that care about the economy - business associations, companies, unions -; promotion of culture - cultural associations -; festive occupation - parties, street parties, etc. -; promotion of music - musical societies, musical groups, etc. -; religious demonstrations - churches, brotherhoods, etc. - and ensure that the testimony of their activities - of those associations that do not have premises in good condition - is preserved and guarded in the municipal archives, so that the citizens , scholars and researchers, can consult the documents they have produced during their lifetime.
We already do this from the Xàtiva town hall, which has accepted, as a donation (in property or in deposit) or purchase, several funds, which in archival terms are called Incorporated Funds:

Services and activities
Located on the ground floor. It is where researchers, students and citizens carry out the relevant work and inquiries. It consists of six study tables and two computers for consulting digitized documents.
The municipal archive of Xàtiva has a reprographic service to facilitate the information required by users, always taking into account current legislation and established documentation accessibility rules.
Over the years, a specialized Auxiliary Library has been created, as recommended by archival regulations. Its function is that of bibliographic, historiographical and divulgative support. The library is made up of more than 5,500 publications grouped in different subjects: encyclopedias and dictionaries; local and regional issues; bibliography of the Valencian Country; general thematic bibliography; archival; legislative collections, works of local administration, law and jurisprudence; and serial publications.
Internal loans are carried out at the request of the offices that produce the existing municipal documentation (the various departments of Xàtiva City Council), and are one of the main coordination activities of the archive.
The archive also participates in the dissemination of the rich Xativí cultural heritage, through loans of materials and documents, through the corresponding procedures, for the realization of exhibitions and other cultural events.
The Municipal Archive of Xàtiva has also been set up as coordinator of the Joint Archive Service of La Costera-La Canal. That is to say, it does not only want to be the depository of municipal activity, but a regional historical reference. This concern is manifested through the relationship with the different towns that make up the region of La Costera, where Xàtiva is located, and the adjacent one, La Canal de Navarrés, through an inventory-cataloguing program of town archives with smaller number of inhabitants. In this sense, the Municipal Archive of Xàtiva wants to contribute to the recovery of the documentary heritage of the region and to the development of local historiography.
Another function of the archive is the dissemination of the city's rich documentary heritage. For this reason, visits are coordinated to educational centers in the city and other localities, as well as collectives or associations and, intermittently, sporadic visits by citizens interested in knowing the facilities of the municipal archive. In this way, they are familiar with the functioning of a municipal archive, of the institution that generates the documents - the Xàtiva City Council - and how it works, and the important impact it has on the life and social, economic and cultural development of your city
In this line of action, from the municipal archive of Xàtiva, periodic exhibitions are developed, through which it is a matter of bringing the rich heritage preserved in it closer to the citizen, as well as showing the restoration and conservation work of the same carried out continuously. Activities related to the cultural dissemination of the city are also carried out (Book Day, commemorations and centenaries, etc.).
The municipal archive also participates in the cultural dissemination of the city and its presence in the media through collaboration in publications, brochures, press, radio, television, etc.
