The City Council's fund is kept in fairly good condition. It has gone through different stages, although in general it has maintained a good conservation policy and at various times in its history reorganization and cataloging tasks have been carried out from the 18th century to the present day, which has allowed to maintain a large amount of documentation.

It has not suffered major documentary losses, although there are gaps in some periods such as the Second Republic or the
Civil war.

It was organized during the 18th century by Pere Joan Franco and in the 1950s by José Martí Soro.

In the 80s it was cataloged thanks to a grant granted by the Ministry of Culture.

The archivist Vicent Ferrer made a typed catalog, used as a search tool.

It joined the Joint Archive Service in 2017 with 8 monthly modules, currently it has contracted 16 monthly modules. Extreme dates 1420.

Documentary funds

The fund of the Villanueva de Castellón City Council, despite not having a volume comparable to the archives of large cities such as Alzira or Xàtiva, contains a wealth of documents that is not to be underestimated and, in some series, far superior to that of the rest of files

The birth as a town at the end of the 16th century marks the beginning of municipal documentation. It is true that for the first moments the amount of information is not very abundant. But the documentation begins to increase in volume throughout the 16th and 17th centuries, although it will not be until the 18th century when the documentation begins to have a wide range of topics.

Featured Funds

We can highlight the following documentation:
– The acts of government of the City Council, in which all the agreements taken by the members of the municipal government are compiled, a series that begins in 1587 and continues to the present day, with few gaps, by means of which can reconstruct the political and social life of the municipality.
– A large number of printed orders from the Intendant and from Madrid, as well as the handwritten trails sent by the Corregidor of Xàtiva, all of them within the chapter of orders and circulars from other authorities, which begin in 1590 and end in the last years of the s. XIX
– The general recruitment files, practically followed since 1770, with some complementary information on the volunteer corps of the beginning of the s. XIX
- Information relating to irrigation water, both from the Terç or Comú de l'Ènova ditch, and some complementary ones from the Escalona ditch, as well as the land wealth registers of the municipal area.
– A large amount of information on the economic aspects of municipal life, from leases of common buildings such as shops or mills, to arbitrations, budgets and
contributions
– The documentation corresponding to the municipal deposit, with information on loans to peasants in the 18th century.
– Documentation of the Batlia (1631-1805).
